Hi Everyone! What’s better than a perfectly grilled steak with a beautiful caramelized crust? Or decadent chocolate and rich espresso? Let’s put them all together to make the most amazing spice rub! Yes you read that right – a spicy chocolate espresso steak. SO good.
I love steak. In my house growing up we had steak pretty much every Friday. It was definitely something to look forward to. Starting the weekend off with a delicious steak dinner. I also love chocolate. LOVE IT. But growing up I would have never thought of having them together. Steak followed by a chocolate dessert? Absolutely. But together? Not so much. Do not miss out. Put all things delicious together.
The cocoa powder and instant espresso help give the steak the perfect crust when seared on the grill. The paprika and cayenne bring a little bit of heat and smokiness. You MUST try this.
And what better time than with Valentine’s Day tomorrow? This is perfect for a romantic dinner. Pair it with a dark red wine with deep blackberry or cherry notes. This is a meal to indulge in. Cheers!
- 1 tbsp instant espresso powder
- 1 tsp cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 tsp sea salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp brown sugar
- 2 tsp smoked paprika
- 3/4 tsp cayenne
Mix all spices together in a bowl.
This makes enough for about 2 well seasoned steaks. You can use it all, or save any unused portions in a zip lock bag.
Pat steak dry with paper towel, then rub with olive oil. Generously cover with seasoning mixture on all sides of the steak, gently rubbing it into the meat.
Having a nice even covering of the spice mixture will help a really nice crust develop on the steak while cooking.
Oil grill and bring it up to medium high heat. Place steaks on grill, and cook to desired doneness, flipping once half way.
